10 Types Of Modesty in Islam

Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah رحمه الله تعالى

May Allaah have mercy upon him

“Al-Hayaa (modesty) is divided into 10 subdivisions:

1. Al-Hayaa (the shamefulness) of committing a crime:

From this is the hayaa of Aadam, ‘alayhis-salaam, when he fled in Paradise.

Allaah, the Most High, said ‘Are you escaping from Me O Aadam?’ he answered: ‘No, my Lord rather being ashamed in front of You.’

2. Hayaa Taqseer (the shamefulness of deficiency):

This is like the hayaa of the Angels who glorify Allaah day and night and do not disobey Him and when the Day of Judgment comes they say ‘You (O Allaah) are far from imperfection and we did not truly carry out Your worship.’

3. Hayaa Ijlaal (modesty regarding the magnificence of Allaah):

This hayaa is of having knowledge, it is the level of knowledge a slave has of his Lord – then the level of his hayaa in this, will be in accordance to his level of knowledge of Allaah.

Important means to assist the woman during Ramadan by Shaykh Fawzaan

Question: What are the most important means that will assist the woman upon obedience during the month of Ramadan?

Answer: (Shaykh Fawzaan) حفظه الله The means that will assist the Muslim upon obedience to Allaah whether they are male or female are as follows.

  1. Fear of Allaah سبحانه وتعالى and to believe that He is observing the creation in all of their actions, and statements, and intentions and that He will take them to account for all of that. Therefore if the person is cognizant of this reality then he will busy himself with the obedience of Allaah and leave off sins and he will hasten to repent from his wrongdoings.
  2. Increase in the remembrance of Allaah and the recitation of the Qur’aan because this will soften the heart. Allaah the Exalted said, ‘Those who believe, and whose hearts find satisfaction in the remembrance of Allaah: for without doubt in the remembrance of Allaah do hearts find satisfaction’. (13:28) And Allaah the Exalted said, ‘The believers are those who, when Allaah is mentioned, feel a tremor in their hearts’. (8:2)
  3. Avoiding the distractions that harden the heart and distance the individual from Allaah, and this is every sin and mixing with evil people and eating from the impermissible and being heedless of the remembrance of Allaah the Exalted, and watching the evil films.
  4. The woman remaining in her home and not leaving her home except due to a need and then returning quickly to her home upon completion of her need.
  5. Sleeping during the night because this will assist the person in waking up during the last part of the night. And sleep a little during the day, this will allow the person to perform their prayers in their respective times, and to busy their time with the obedience of Allaah.
  6. Guarding their tongues from backbiting and tale carrying and he said she said, bearing false witness and impermissible speech, but rather they should busy their tongue with the remembrance of Allaah.

Knowledge is Rizq From Allah

Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Aziz bin Baaz [رحمه الله] said:

“It is known that acquiring knowledge is from the best of provisions. It is exiting from the confinement of ignorance and its darkness to the vastness of knowledge and its light.”

Allaah [تعالى] said:

وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا‏

‘And whosoever fears Allaah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make his matter easy for him.’

Acquiring beneficial knowledge is from the greatest of success and ease; because the student of Sharia’ knowledge acquires with his knowledge many types of goodness and means of salvation which cannot easily be acquired by the ignorant person.”

The Story of the Pearl Necklace

Al Haafidh ibn Rajab mentioned in the commentary of the tabiqaat of Al Hanaabila (196/1) in the biography of Al Qaadi Abi Bakr Muhammad Abdul Al Baaqi Al Bazzaz who died in the year 535 from the migration of the Messenger of ALLAH, peace and blessing be upon him.

Sheik Saalih Abu Al Qaasim Al Khazaz Al Bagdadi said, I heard Al Qaadi Abi Bakr Muhammad Abdul Al Baaqi Al Bazzaz Al Ansaari say:

I used to live in the vicinity of Mecca, may ALLAH the Exalted protect it, so one day I was stricken with severe hunger and I did not find anything to fight against this hunger. So I found a bag made from silk, tied with a tassel that was also made from silk, so I grabbed it and took it to my house. When I unfasten it I found in it a necklace made from pearl such that I had not seen the like of it before. So when I exited my house I saw an old man that was seeking this bag. With him was a torn rag containing five hundred dinar and he was saying, “This is for the one who returns to me the bag containing the pearls.” So I said, ‘I am in need, I am hungry, so I will take this money and benefit from it and return to him the bag’. • The First Affair: Purifying the Intention.

Knowledge is sought sincerely for Allaah سبحانه و تعالى, to remove the ignorance from oneself, his/her family and the people. Iblees Prevents People From Knowledge

The learned scholar Ibn al-Jawzi رحمه الله تعالى said:

” اعلم أن أول تلبيس إبليس على الناس صدهم عن العلم لأن العلم نور فإذا أطفأ مصابيحهم خبَّطهم في الظلام كيف شاء ” .

‘Know that the first deception of the Shaytaan of the people was to prevent and block them from knowledge, this is because knowledge is light. So if the Shaytaan extinguishes their lanterns then he causes them to wander about blindly however he wishes.’
